STATEMENT, 7 May 09

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in Australia acknowledges the findings from the Coronial Inquest into David Iredale’s death which concluded today, 7 May 09.  The National Award Authority will work with the State and Territory Offices to fully review the recommendations concerning The Award's literature and will work toward implementing the recommendations as a matter of priority.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in Australia would also like to take this opportunity, at the conclusion of the Inquest, to once again pass on our heartfelt condolences to the Iredale family.

The Award notes the Coroner’s statement which said his recommendations ‘should not be seen as any criticism of the Scheme nor imply shortcomings’.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a youth empowerment programme which equips, engages and rewards young Australians striving toward personal excellence. Currently there are over 1,100 licensed operators Australia wide who manage the implementation of The Award programme. In 2008, The Award was undertaken by some 33,000 young Australians aged between 14 and 25.
