Northern Territory Projects
Wilderness to Wharf
In the Northern Territory many of the youth in remote communities are ‘bush smart’ and have strong bush survival skills so taking these young people out camping is not a challenge. To ensure that Territory youth in remote and rural regions such as West and East Arnhem Land, Commalie Shire and the Alice Springs municipality are provided with equal opportunities as those in the local region we developed this project that can provide and support participants from the ‘bush’ to travel to Darwin municipality and learn ‘city craft’ over a two day exploration. The main aim is to provide these youth with exposure to a new environment, learn something new and use their initiative to fit into a ‘city’ environment.
The Award program is recognized as community learning which means that students earn valuable credit’s towards their senior certificate of education. Remote schools and community centre’s provide a fantastic base to coordinate the program, and we have found that our program offers flexibility and incentives that encourages student attendance and active participation within their community.
As a prerequisite participant’s must demonstrate that they are close to completing the Bronze Award program and that they are enrolled in school.
Educational Road Trips
Due to the remoteness of communities in the Northern Territory, and the lack of resources available to them, we are taking ourselves out to Community Education Centre’s and High Schools Katherine, Raminging, Gove, Jabiru to conduct activities that encourage the development of young Territorians living a healthy lifestyle and engaging in their community.
Special Needs Youth Project
One of our ultimate goals is for all young territorians to achieve their full potential. There are up to five Gold and 3 Bronze Special Needs Participants that are seeking support to go by rail for both of their journeys. For their Practice journey - that will take up to five days from Darwin to Katherine so they can visit Mataranka and camp overnight in Katherine. For their Qualifying journey they will travel from Darwin to Alice Springs and meet up with other special needs youth and experience indigenous culture. The aim is for special needs youth to experience travelling via different modes of transport, meet and participate in activities with other special needs youth and to explore the Territory’s history.
