Dukes Mob...

With fun to be had, friends to be made, a Qualified Outdoor Recreation Trainer and Outdoor Equipment for hire, why wouldn’t you want to be a part of The Dukes Mob NT?

From school operators, community groups and Young Professionals in corporate roles The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award NT caters for youth aged 14-25 residing in any area of the Northern Territory. No matter who you are or where you live – Dukes is yours to make of it what you will.

Current Territory Projects

Canoe Training (May and ongoing)– How much more fun can be had when more Coordinators have the qualifications to take their participants out on excursions?  Recently six Coordinators completed their Canoe Coordinator Training Course allowing them to Coordinate their own Canoeing expeditions.  Watch this space for more Train the Trainer opportunities.

In the gorge canoeingOrd River Experience (July, 2008)– Picture This -6 Gold participants and 3 of their friends cruising the luxurious Ord River in an ideal climate with picturesque mountainous terrain surrounding them.  Then add our Outdoor Recreation Trainer, Justin Lee, 10 canoes and a 4 day canoeing challenge involving 8 hours of purposeful effort and you have Gold Participants on their way to completing part of their Adventurous Journey.  The Ord River experience is a great opportunity for Gold participants to meet new people through their Award which has, for the main part, been conducted autonomously. This is also a time for Gold participants to show off their skills and commitment to their Award by inviting a friend to participate as well. http://www.westernaustralia.com/en/Pages/Attraction.aspx?n=Ord_River&pid=9003172

Wilderness to Wharf – While many Adventurous Journeys conducted across Australia involve participants going on an expedition into the Wilderness and camping out that is not much of a challenge for many of our Territory participants who already have great bush survival skills. Therefore Wilderness to Wharf was developed to bring participants from the Wilderness into the Darwin Wharf precinct to conduct an exploration of ‘city craft’ and training that includes catching public transport, participating in personal presentation training and enjoying lunch with the Administrator of the NT, The Hon Tom Pauling at Government House.  Wilderness to Wharf is a great opportunity to explore city sights and work as a team in a new environment.

Henbury School – As mentioned previously The Award is for ALL Territory youth aged 14-25. One afternoon each week our qualified Dukes Award Coordinator, Jason Barnes, spends time with the Special Needs students guiding them through their Award. With support from Territory Housing, Henbury School participants have been maintaining the grounds of a nearby Seniors Village and becoming more active members of the Territory Community.

Wilderness To Wave – Some young people have never been on a plane. Some young people have never been on a boat. In Tennant Creek some of these youth have never even seen a freeway. It is for this reason that Wilderness to Wave has been implemented. Twelve Indigenous students from Tennant Creek will travel to Sydney over the October Holidays and participate in Surf Lifesaving activities in an environment unlike any they’ve ever seen. Currently learning to swim, the lifesaving initiative will be their reward for hard work and commitment in embracing new activities. By the end they would have been on a plane, a ferry, experienced surfing, camping in new terrain, dining out, trains and buses – a new experience never to be forgotten.
