The Requirements for the Physical Recreation Section
For this Section, Participants must:
1. Undertake an activity regularly where they work up a sweat, for the required length of time depending on Award level chosen.
2. Show regular commitment, progress and improvement of their chosen activity.
3. Understand regular commitment usually means at least one hour per week.
4. Activities must be undetaken substantially in their own time. This means that while some activity may take place within school, university or work hours, most of it should occur outside these scheduled times.
Please note that goals should be realistic and achievable within an individual's ability.
Like all Sections of The Duke of Ed, choosing a physical activity is a personal choice. Each participant should choose a physical activity that interest them. This culd be something new, or something they are already doing and would like to improve. You can choose to go alone, do something with a group or do something that no one else is doing! It's up to you. You just need to have inspiration, motivation, effort and break a sweat...oh, and have fun!
It can be helpful to link in with a club or follow a program of a sport's national governing body in order to provide a structure to the chosen activity. Guidelines can also be helpful in setting meaningful and achievable goals.
For Silver and Gold, it's not required to undertake the same activity for the entire required time. E.g. A Participant can choose one sport such as netball to do in Winter, and then play Softball during Summer. As long as there is still regular commitment and improvement in both activities, it's fine to split. Just keep in mind this may require two Assessors so double check.
